Traffic Volume Counts
Foreword | Description of Column Headings | Available Reports
The Massachusetts Highway Department conducts an annual traffic data collection program. This data is available online by autoroute and city/town list or as an interactive map. You can view data for a specific town from the Town Index, for numbered routes from the Numbered Route Index, or you can use the interactive map to browse data by area. You can also download the complete spreadsheets using the links below.
Foreword
A traffic counting program is conducted each year by the Statewide Traffic Data Collection section of the Massachusetts Highway Department. The 2006 program involved the systematic collection of traffic data utilizing automatic traffic recorders located on various roadways throughout the state. The traffic counts compiled in this document are of four types:
Continuous Counts (indicated with an "L" (Loop) in the station number column)
The continuous count program consists of 244 stations of which 183 are being counted hourly every day of the year.
Coverage Counts
The coverage count program consists of a total of 2327 counts spread across a three year counting cycle. This year's program consisted of 671 counts, of which the Regional Planning Agencies were responsible for 200. Each traffic count is of a 48 hour duration and is repeated once every three years.
Classification Counts
The classification count program consisted of a total of 212 counts. Each traffic count is of a 48 hour duration.
Special Counts (station number begins with an "S" indicting special count)
All requests for traffic related data come under this program and includes providing traffic data for the Department's pavement, highway and bridge design efforts. This Includes pavement rehabilitation, construction, maintenance, construction staging and traffic management. Data gathered in support of the Department's program varies from single road tube automatic traffic recorder counts to intersection turning movements for traffic signal design and vehicle type classification (of which there were 706 this year) for pavement design and environmental analyses (air quality and noise levels).
The Department wishes to acknowledge the contributions of the Massachusetts Port Authority, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and the Regional Planning Agencies in providing many of the traffic counts included in this report. A list of the Regional Planning Agencies is included in section V.

[back to top] Description of Sections
The data collected in this work program provides the Traffic Data Collection section with the information which allows staff to develop the necessary travel and traffic volume estimates required to satisfy the Department's needs in the areas of highway planning, engineering, construction, maintenance, and the overall administration of highway programs in the state.
This report provides a descriptive tabulation of average daily traffic based on traffic counts taken in 2006 both on and off the numbered route and state highway systems of the Commonwealth. The tabulation is arranged in five (5) separate sections:
SECTION I - CONTINUOUS COUNTING STATIONS
This tabulation shows the average monthly traffic counts for the years 2002 through 2006. TRAFFIC GROWTH SUMMARY - This shows the urban/rural percent change from 2005 to 2006 by district for the continuous stations.
SECTION II - TRAFFIC VOLUMES BY NUMBERED ROUTES
This section provides data for the numbered auto route system on a statewide basis. All continuous stations and their 2006 values shown in section I above are also included in their proper sequence in this section. Past traffic data for the years 1997 through 2005 are also included, if available.
SECTION III - TRAFFIC VOLUMES BY CITY AND TOWN
This section provides data for roads, streets and the numbered route system. All 2006 traffic counts are included and listed alphabetically by city/town, including the continuous and numbered route counts in sections I and II above. Past traffic data for the years 1997 through 2005 are also included, if available.
SECTION IV - TRUCK PERCENTAGE DATA BY CITY AND TOWN
This section provides truck percentage data for roads, streets and the numbered route system. All 2006 truck percentage data are listed alphabetically by city/town. Past truck percentage data for the years 1999 through 2005 are also included, if available.
SECTION V
Massachusetts Turnpike Authority - Traffic volumes are shown between interchanges for all links of the Massachusetts Turnpike (Rte. I-90).
Sumner Tunnel/Callahan Tunnel (Rte. 1A) - Traffic volumes are shown for the Sumner Tunnel and Callahan Tunnel. Tolls are collected on the inbound to Boston roadway only.
Ted Williams Tunnel (I-90) - Tolls are collected on the inbound to Boston roadway only.
Massachusetts Port Authority - Tobin Memorial Bridge (Rte.1). Tolls are collected on the inbound to Boston roadway only.

[back to top] Description of Column Headings
The following is a description of the column headings found in sections II, III and IV.
- ROUTE NUMBER - The official Massachusetts, United States or Interstate auto route number generally posted along the highway and appearing on the official Transportation Map of Massachusetts.
- STREET NAME - The official city or town name for the unnumbered roads or streets.
- CITY/TOWN - The city or town in which the count was taken.
- LOCATION - A description of the location of the count within the city or town.
C.L. = City Line, T.L. = Town Line, S.L. = State Line and km = kilometers (1 km = 0.62 mile).
- ADT (AVERAGE DAILY TRAFFIC) - A value representing the average annual 24 hour traffic volume.
- For the continuous count stations, this value is calculated by averaging the daily traffic for each of the 12 months.
- For the coverage and special count stations, this value is estimated by adjusting the actual count for seasonality through the use of continuous count group factors and axle correction factors for trucks.
- Tph (Truck peak hour) - The percentage of trucks during the peak hour.
- Tad (Truck average day) - The percentage of trucks during the day.
